What activities UMS offers
2010-11
Since Usha Mohila Somity was established in 2003 it has offered its members (female
carers of physically and/or mentally disabled children) a range of activities to
promote their health and well being. Unfortunately recently over the last 18 months
the range of activities has been reduced due to a lack of funding from statutory
sources.
Currently the members are able to take part in:
-
ESOL classes
This takes place on a Wednesday at the Discovery Home Short Breaks Respite Centre
-
Gym
The female members occasionally go to the gym.
-
NVQ in Customer Care
SEDA have been delivering the course at Discovery Home Short Breaks Respite Centre
for the members of UMS.
-
Ad hoc support ie form filling, dealing with Social Services
This is a service that is increasingly in demand as changes to the welfare system
take hold. UMS does not have a professional advice worker so this role has been
undertaken by the Project Coordinator on an ad hoc and informal basis. Subject to
securing funding, there are plans to fully develop this service to include specialist
legal advice and benefits advice. The biggest advantages that the women derive from
attending the centre is the companionship – exchanging advice, information and stories
from each others lives. Simply knowing they are not alone with their specific concerns
and needs is the biggest help of all.
